Richard Louv Mini-Grants

Richard LouvBay Area Wilderness Training is honored to announce the launch of The Richard Louv Mini Grants Program. Through the generousity of Richard Louv and other BAWT supporters, we will be offering 20 grants in the amount of $250 to youth organizations to cover the cost of venturing into the outdoors with the youth that they serve.

A portion of these grants will be reserved for youth workers taking kids on outdoor adventures for the first time.

Through the establishment of The Richard Louv Mini Grant Program, we seek to honor Richard and his support of our mission - Getting Youth Outdoors - by providing resources to youth workers who have completed our Wilderness Leadership Training Program.

Program Guidlines

  • Any organization currently employing Wilderness Leadership Training course alum may apply
  • $5,000 will be granted within the calendar year 2009
  • Funds will be allocated in 20 grants of $250 each
  • 5 grants will be reserved for first-time trip leaders
  • Grant applications will be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis by a BAWT committee
  • Funds can be used by youth organizations to cover the costs of any outdoor trip they take within 6 months following the grant announcement
  • Funds will be disbursed upon submission of receipts showing use of funds
  • All organizations receiving a grant must submit a one-page narrative, within 1 week following their trip, describing their success, challenges, etc. Pictures are additionally requested but not required
  • All organizations receiving a grant will also receive a copy of the most updated edition of "Last Child in the Woods, Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder"

About Richard Louv

Richard Louv is an author and journalist focused on nature, family and community. His most recent book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, has stimulated an international conversation about the future relationship between children and nature, and has helped spawn a movement that is now moving into the international sphere.

He serves as chairman of the Children & Nature Network (C&NN), an organization helping to build the international movement to connect children with nature. BAWT is a founding partner of C&NN's regional initiative, Children in Nature Collaborative.

Richard Louv also serves as honorary co-chair of The National Forum on Children and Nature. Co-chaired by four state governors, the Forum, sponsored by the Conservation Fund, will fund programs around the country designed to get kids outside. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at Clemson University.
